How Do You Know When To Take The Leap To Go Into Franchising?

You are running a successful business. The income is good, you have built a loyal customers’ base and have been enjoying a distinctive position in the market. So, it is quite natural to have the urge of spreading the wings. Franchising the business will allow you to spread the name of your company faster and without a great amount of investment. But there are certain signs that you must consider before you take the leap from being just an independent businessman to a franchisor.

1. You have more than one open unit: Franchising means looking after more than one unit. Though you won’t be involved with the day-to-day running of the units, you will have to oversee various other departments. That is why if you know what it takes to administer after more than one unit, you are quite ready to take the leap to franchising.
2. You have excellent track record: For some years, you have been earning handsomely from your business. Prospective franchisees will be attracted, if they see that they can earn substantially from your business. Hence, good financial report-card for the past couple of years is a good sign to go to the next level.
3. You have an operation manual in place: Franchising means duplicating a successful business model. In order to replicate your business model, at first, you are supposed to write an operation manual for it. If that is already done, you are more than ready to take the plunge.
4. You have the required finance: Starting a franchising chain requires a good amount of investment from your part. Many times, great concepts/products fail to make the switch, because the owners didn’t have enough money. So, make sure you have enough provision for running your own business, operating the new franchising division and looking after your family members.
5. You have assembled people to create a competent team: Franchising involves a good amount of background work. So, if you can create a new department with people trained in handling franchise-related queries, it is a significant step in your quest to leap into the world of franchising.
